SUMMARY:Bohmian Poetics 2026: Opening Time
DESCRIPTION:Bohmian Poetics 2026: Opening Time \n\n\n\nSaturday and Sunday November 7 & 8\, 2026 \n\n\n\n9:00am PST  | 12:00pm EST  | 5:00pm GMT  |  6:00pm CET \n\n\n\nHosted by Lee Nichol\, with Ronald Purser and Bruce Alderman \n\n\n\nA two-session series – each session will last two hours. \n\n\n\nAll registered participants will receive the RECORDING. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn July of 2026\, the Pari Center initiated a new series of programs exploring the many different directions the metaphysics of David Bohm could take. Titled “Bohmian Poetics\,” the programs are inspired by Bohm’s implicate/explicate\, enfolding/unfolding framework. In that perspective\, the manifest world that we experience on a daily basis is perpetually emerging from subtle\, hidden orders that are not directly available to traditional sense experience. \n\n\n\nThere are many historical precedents for this perspective. In Western philosophy\, there are similar themes from Aristotle through Maritn Heidegger. It was Heidegger who revived the term “poiesis” in western thought\, framing it as the movement from that which is concealed to that which is manifest. \n\n\n\nThere are innumerable aspects of human experience that move through this “poiesis” from hidden to manifest – but by and large those aspects are unnoticed or downplayed. Bohmian poetics is an intentional turn toward this movement from hidden to manifest – looking for it\, sensing it\, attuning to it\, in all its myriad manifestations. And then\, communicating together what that poiesis might mean for human beings. \n\n\n\nThis second installment of Bohmian poetics will take up the question of time\, from a participatory perspective. How does time arise in experience – and from where? What is involved in foregrounding our tacit assumptions about the nature of time\, and what value might lie therein? \n\n\n\nWe will draw on Bohm’s views of pre-space/time\, time and eternity\, implicate and explicate orders\, and what bearing these have on human freedom. We will also examine Henri Bergson’s notion of durée – the living experience of embodied time\, and how this stands in contrast to theoretical time. And for the first time at Pari\, we will open up the perspectives in Tarthang Tulku’s Time\, Space\, and Knowledge\, an extensive exploration of these fundamental aspects of experience – and how they arise from moment to moment. \n\n\n\nBetween Saturday and Sunday\, interested participants will have the opportunity to engage in overnight experiments with how time reveals itself\, and what part it plays in structuring our sense of reality. Sunday will be partially given over to sharing the results of these experiments\, and what they might mean. \n\n\n\nPossible readings (not required): \n\n\n\n\nMind Space: Discovering Meditation Without the Meditator\, Ronald Purser\n\n\n\nLiving in Time: The Philosophy of Henri Bergson\, Barry Allen\n\n\n\nThought as a System\, David Bohm\n\n\n\nInto the Blue: Chasing the Spirit of David Bohm\, Lee Nichol\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRonald E. Purser\, Ph.D.\, is the Lam Larsen Distinguished Research Professor of Management at San Francisco State University\, and a senior faculty member at Dharma College in Berkeley. His most recent books include Mind Space: Discovering Meditation Without the Meditator and McMindfulness: How Mindfulness Became the New Capitalist Spirituality. He has been studying and working with Tarthang Tulku’s Time\, Space and Knowledge vision for over four decades. His interest in the philosophical works of David Bohm goes back to the early 1990s\, when he taught an experimental course on Bohmian dialogue at Loyola University of Chicago. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBruce Alderman is the associate director of the Blue Sky Leaders Program at California Institute of Integral Studies\, a faculty with the Consciousness\, Psychology\, and Transformation program at National University\, and author of several forthcoming books\, including Feeling Fully Alive; Giving Voice to Time and Space; and Unfolding the Senses. He has followed David Bohm’s work since reading Wholeness and the Implicate Order in the early 1980s\, and has been a practitioner of Tarthang Tulku’s Time Space Knowledge vision for a similar length of time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLee Nichol is Director of Bohmian Studies at the Pari Center. He was a friend and colleague of David Bohm\, and is editor of Bohm’s On Creativity; The Essential David Bohm; and On Dialogue. He has been on the faculty of Denver University in Denver\, Colorado\, and the Tibetan Nyingma Institute in Berkeley\, California. His latest book is Into the Blue: Chasing the Spirit of David Bohm\, his account of 50 years of experimentation with Bohm’s metaphysics. He is a founding member of the experimental Pari Center Holoflux group.

SUMMARY:Beyond Jung: Jung and Pauli
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Jung: Jung and PauliPsyche\, Matter\, Meaning \n\n\n\n14–29 November 20269:00 am PST | 12:00 pm EST | 5:00 pm GMT | 6:00 pm CET \n\n\n\nA six-part online series over three weekends exploring the remarkable encounter between C.G. Jung and Wolfgang Pauli\, and their shared search for a deeper understanding of psyche\, matter and meaning. \n\n\n\nWith Jonathan Allday\, Paul Bishop\, Suzanne Gieser\, Roderick Main\, Arthur I. Miller\, Beverley Zabriskie \n\n\n\nEach session is two hours. All registered participants will receive access to the recordings\, so you can attend live or watch at a time convenient to you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat happens when one of the twentieth century’s most influential psychologists enters into a sustained dialogue with one of its great physicists? \n\n\n\nFew intellectual encounters of the twentieth century were as unlikely—or as fertile—as the extraordinary dialogue between the pioneering psychologist C. G. Jung and the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Wolfgang Pauli. Together they ventured beyond the conventional boundaries of their respective disciplines to explore the deeper relationship between psyche and matter\, the role of the observer\, the significance of dreams and symbols\, and the possibility of an underlying reality from which mind and world emerge. \n\n\n\nAcross three weekends and six live sessions\, Beyond Jung: Jung and Pauli brings together leading scholars to examine the radical vision of their joint work\, their engagement with myth\, alchemy and interpretation\, Pauli’s dreams and personal correspondence\, and the revolutionary physics that shaped his thought. In doing so\, the series asks what their remarkable collaboration can still teach us about knowledge\, meaning and our place within reality. \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\nSaturday November 14\, 2026The Radical Epistemological Vision of Jung and Pauli’s The Interpretation of Nature and the Psychewith Roderick Main\n\n\n\nSunday November 15\, 2026Archetypal Hermeneutics? SUMMARY:Beyond Jung: Jung and Pauli\, 1 of 6 - The Radical Epistemological Vision of Jung and Pauli’s The Interpretation of Nature and the Psyche
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Jung: Jung and Pauli 1/6 \n\n\n\nThe Radical Epistemological Vision of Jung and Pauli’s The Interpretation of Nature and the PsycheWith Roderick Main \n\n\n\nSaturday November 14\, 20269:00 am PST | 12:00 pm EST | 5:00 pm GMT | 6:00 pm CET \n\n\n\nThis session is two hours. All registered participants will receive access to the recordings\, so you can attend live or watch at a time convenient to you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, I shall offer a reading of Jung and Pauli’s joint book\, The Interpretation of Nature and the Psyche (1952/1955)\, focusing on the fundamental problem both thinkers were attempting to address: the rationalistic one-sidedness of modern science with its perilous psychological\, social\, cultural\, and environmental consequences. I shall highlight how\, in response to this problem\, each of the two essays in the book—Jung’s Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle and Pauli’s The Influence of Archetypal Ideas in the Scientific Theories of Kepler—offers a radically expanded\, holistic vision of the origin\, nature\, and scope of knowledge. I shall show that this epistemological vision also has implications for ontology\, methodology\, and ethics\, that is\, for how we might understand reality\, pursue science and scholarship\, and relate to one another\, nature\, and our ultimate concerns. Throughout\, I shall draw attention to how the two essays interrelate\, support each other\, and together make a richer and more compelling case than either essay makes individually. Finally\, I shall assess the extent to which the radically different way of doing science and scholarship that emerges from the essays is exemplified by the essays themselves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoderick Main\, PhD\, works at the University of Essex\, UK\, where he is Professor in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies and Director of the Centre for Myth Studies. His books include The Rupture of Time: Synchronicity and Jung’s Critique of Modern Western Culture(Brunner-Routledge\, 2004)\, Revelations of Chance: Synchronicity as Spiritual Experience (SUNY\, 2007)\, and Breaking the Spell of Disenchantment: Mystery\, Meaning\, and Metaphysics in the Work of C.G. Jung (Chiron Publications\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Beyond Jung: Jung and Pauli\, 2 of 6 - Archetypal Hermeneutics? Wolfgang Pauli on the Grail\, C.G. Jung on Goethe’s Faust
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Jung: Jung and Pauli 2/6 \n\n\n\nArchetypal Hermeneutics? Wolfgang Pauli on the Grail\, C.G. Jung on Goethe’s FaustWith Paul Bishop \n\n\n\nSunday November 15\, 20269:00 am PST | 12:00 pm EST | 5:00 pm GMT | 6:00 pm CET \n\n\n\nThis session is two hours. All registered participants will receive access to the recordings\, so you can attend live or watch at a time convenient to you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn many ways\, the twentieth century was the century of interpretation—or\, to give it its technical name\, hermeneutics. This session will examine the question of interpretation for Wolfgang Pauli and C.G. Jung alike\, discussing (a) Pauli’s interest in the Grail myth as reflected in his correspondence with Emma Jung and (b) Jung’s interpretation of Pauli’s dreams in relation to his own pursuit of alchemical themes in Goethe’s Faust. The session will invite participants to consider the following question: What is the role of hermeneutics or interpretation in our own quest for meaning? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Bishop is Honorary Professorial Research Fellow in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Glasgow\, UK. He is interested in all aspects of German culture and thought\, in tracing the progression of ideas through time\, and in uncovering links between German culture and the concepts of analytical psychology. He is the author of various studies on aspects of Jung’s thought in an intellectual-historical perspective\, and he is currently working on a four-volume project (published by Chiron)\, Jung and the Epic of Transformation.

SUMMARY:Beyond Jung: Jung and Pauli\, 3 of 6 - Symmetry: Pauli\, and Chinese Woman Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Jung: Jung and Pauli 3/6 \n\n\n\nSymmetry: Pauli\, and Chinese woman dreamsWith Beverley Zabriskie \n\n\n\nSaturday November 21\, 20269:00 am PST | 12:00 pm EST | 5:00 pm GMT | 6:00 pm CET \n\n\n\nThis session is two hours. All registered participants will receive access to the recordings\, so you can attend live or watch at a time convenient to you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTwo intellectual giants\, the Nobel Laureate quantum physicist Wolfgang Pauli\, although 25 years younger\, and the Swiss psychiatrist and analyst\, C.G. Jung\, exchanged thoughts and feelings about the nature of realities through vibrant letters and their thesis of synchronicity. In their view\, a human observance could grant significance\, not of cause and consequence\, but of correlates and correspondences. When imprinted by emotion\, elaborated by imagination\, and consolidated by memory\, the human capacity for reflection thus created an experience of psyche in the material world. \n\n\n\nFrom their respective poles\, Jung’s from the inside-out\, and Pauli’s from the outside-in\, these men and their collaboration continue to transgress categories and alter our species’ framing of the human position\, in space and time\, whether held as basic properties\, mental constructs or crucial factors of existence. \n\n\n\nEach man was transgressive\, not bound by the constructs in their fields. Their stretch and grasp crossed false frontiers through their overlapping interests in the underlying patterns in the impersonal and subjective natures of reality. Pauli shared Jung’s perception of an unconscious reality as well as the external\, a space he termed ‘a kind of secret laboratory beyond human consciousness.’ (Pauli to Fierz\, October 3\, 1951\, von Meyenn 1996\, p. 377). Each of course had limitations. In his science\, and hence in self\, Pauli insisted on symmetry as fundamental in the physical world. But in the ‘secret laboratory’ his dreams of a dancing and spinning Chinese woman may be seen as his unconscious\, internal effort to wrest him from a concept being proven unscientific in favour of symmetry-breaking\, allowing a separation of the mental and physical worlds. They may also have prepared him for illness and death. We will evoke his dream imagery as metaphor and reality\, addressing both renewal of theory and internal transformation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeverley Zabriskie\, L.C.S.W. is a Certified Jungian Analyst in New York City\, a founding faculty member and former President of the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association (JPA)\, and past Vice President of the Philemon Foundation which produces the unpublished writings of Jung. Her publications include ‘A Meeting of Rare Minds\,’ the Preface to Atom and Archetype. The Pauli-Jung Correspondence\, Princeton Press\, 2001; ‘Time and Tao in Synchronicity’ in The Pauli-Jung Conjecture and Its Impact Today (2014); ‘Psychic energy and synchronicity\,’ Journal of Analytical Psychology\, (April 2014).

It suggests that the world we experience in our day-to-day business is not all that there is. Rather it arises from structures that are less substantial to our senses\, but equally real\, existing in a layer of reality beneath the commonplace. Philosophically\, the mainstream has moved away from Neo-Platonism\, but suggestions from quantum mechanics\, mathematics and other aspects of science\, along with the philosophy of mind and some modern thinking on aesthetics\, ethics and morality\, suggest that Plato’s ideas are worth revisiting. \n\n\n\nThis two-day event features a keynote presentation by Professor Angie Hobbs FRSA\, with the title: ‘Flourishing\, Character and Justice: Why Plato Matters Now’ on day one\, followed by a single-day conference with other speakers as well as delegate discussions on the relevance of Plato’s thought to modern times. The second day will be limited to 22 attendees and will finish with dinner at a Cambridge college. Lunch will also be provided during the day. \n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n26th November \n\n\n\n17:00 Public Lecture and Keynote Presentation: Professor Angie Hobbs FRSA \n\n\n\nTo be held at: The Institute of Criminology\, Sidgwick Avenue room B3/4 \n\n\n\nFlourishing\, Character and Justice: Why Plato Matters Now \n\n\n\nWhat might it mean to live a flourishing life? And what is the relationship between flourishing and the virtues\, especially justice? In this talk based on her recent book\, Professor Angie Hobbs explores how Plato can help us with these urgent questions\, and how he addresses the key issue of character formation\, and why it never benefits us to return wrong for wrong. She shows how she has used his methodology\, ideas and arguments in a variety of sectors to address contemporary issues in education\, faith–secular debate\, health care and the civil service\, and invites the audience to discuss with her what further lessons can be applied. SUMMARY:Beyond Jung: Jung and Pauli\, 6 of 6 - The Power of Dreams: When Physics met Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Jung: Jung and Pauli 6/6 \n\n\n\nThe Power of Dreams: When Physics met Psychologywith Arthur I. Miller \n\n\n\nSunday November 29\, 20269:00 am PST | 12:00 pm EST | 5:00 pm GMT | 6:00 pm CET \n\n\n\nThis session is two hours. All registered participants will receive access to the recordings\, so you can attend live or watch at a time convenient to you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMost physicists are adamant that they don’t make discoveries while dreaming. Wolfgang Pauli was different because from Carl Jung he learned the power of dreams. This enabled him to discover CPT symmetry\, a higher form of mirror symmetry\, a key factor in Jung’s work. Pauli and Jung believed that physics and psychology were mirror images. I will develop Pauli’s important discovery and more. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArthur I. Miller is Emeritus Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at University College London and holds a PhD in physics from MIT. His work explores creativity and the intersections of science\, art and psychology\, with a particular interest in the great scientific and intellectual developments of the twentieth century. \n\n\n\nHe is the author of numerous acclaimed books\, including 137: Jung\, Pauli\, and the Pursuit of a Scientific Obsession\, which explores the remarkable relationship between physicist Wolfgang Pauli and psychologist Carl Jung and the ways their exchange of ideas influenced their thinking about psyche\, matter\, number and synchronicity. His other books include Einstein\, Picasso: Space\, Time and the Beauty That Causes Havoc\, Empire of the Stars\, Colliding Worlds: How Cutting-Edge Science is Redefining Contemporary Art\, and The Artist in the Machine: The World of AI-Powered Creativity. \n\n\n\nMiller has lectured internationally and written extensively on the history and philosophy of modern science\, scientific creativity\, the relationship between art and science\, and artificial intelligence.
