Michael Murphy

Michael Murphy is a graduate of Stanford University, co-founder of Esalen Institute in 1962, and founder of Esalen’s Center for Theory and Research. He is a key figure in the Human Potential Movement and author of The Future of the Body (1992), a massive historical and cross-cultural collection of documentation of various occurrences of extraordinary human functioning such as healing, hypnosis, martial arts, yogic techniques, clairvoyance, telepathy, and feats of superhuman strength and extraordinary potential. He is an author of numerous books. His novels include The Kingdom of Shivas Irons, Golf in the Kingdom, Jacob Atabet, and An End to Ordinary History. His latest nonfiction work is An End to Ordinary History: Comments on a Philosophical Novel. Other nonfiction work includes: God and the Evolving Universe, co-authored with James Redfield and Sylvia Timbers; In the Zone, an anthology of extraordinary sports experiences, co-authored with Rhea White; The Life We Are Given, a book about transformative practice, co-authored with George Leonard; and The Physical and Psychological Effects of Meditation, co-authored with Steve Donovan.
