The Science of Beauty: How Art Generates, Expands and Alters Consciousness. Neuroaesthetic

This is an excerpt from one of the presentations featured in the Pari Center’s event Consciousness 2.0, in Pari on June 3-10, 2025.

From the first artistic manifestations in prehistory to the complex expressions of contemporary art, humanity has used art as a form of communication, exploration, and transformation of consciousness. Art not only represents reality, but amplifies it, providing societies with a means to transmit knowledge, emotions, and expanded states of consciousness.

Neuroscience, through neuroaesthetics, has shown that aesthetic experience is not simply a subjective pleasure, but a process deeply rooted in our biology. Studies have revealed that interaction with art stimulates neural networks that go beyond mere visual recognition, activating cognitive processes related to memory, creativity, and the perception of time and space.

This conference will explore how art, since prehistoric times, has been an engine of transformation, not only at an individual level but also collectively, allowing the expansion of consciousness and the evolution of human perception. We will look at how figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, Gaudí and Picasso have challenged the limits of perception, and how science has begun to understand the impact these artistic expressions have on our brains.

Koncha Pinos is a highly successful educator with extensive international teaching experience, She is renowned for her pioneering work in neuroaesthetics and wellbeing, particularly at the intersection of biofilia and art. Her research has explored the sensoperception and emotional impact of Gaudí’s Casa Batlló and delved into Picasso’s work, examining synesthesia and emotion within the context of neurodiversity. Invited as a guest lecturer and researcher in neuroscience, intelligence, and social intervention, she has served as Director and founder of multiple Masters programs at esteemed institutions including Camilo José Cela University in Madrid and Deusto University. An invaluable asset to any education team, she consistently delivers critical results through data-driven insights and outstanding rapport with colleagues, students, and families in high-pressure, deadline-driven environments. She has also authored over 25 books focusing on early brain development and the cultivation of compassion in politics.
