Syntropy: A Scientific Expression of Purpose in Life and Beyond Death

This is an excerpt from one of the presentations featured in the Pari Center’s event Bringing Meaning Back to Life, in Pari on September 2-9, 2025.
The idea that consciousness is primary is becoming an increasingly prominent topic of conversation in ever-broadening circles. As this invites us to question the very nature of reality, a great deal of evidence that time and space are not objective absolutes is being examined with a more open mind. One example of this is the principle of syntropy (predicted by the same laws of physics that lead to entropy) that describes how energy and information can flow from the future to the present, and for which a large body of scientific evidence has been collected.
The implications of syntropy are profound, as they describe a purposeful universe in which all things are intrinsically interconnected. Just as importantly, the complementarity between syntropy and entropy suggests that we must take a new look at how we understand time and space, and recognize the very strong possibility that these concepts are more likely cognitive tools rather than objective aspects of a universe independent of the consciousnesses that experience it.
This talk will provide a short background on the concept of syntropy and explore not only the above-described implications, but what they mean for understanding life and death in the context of a reality where time is a tool of narrative.

Dr. Jeffrey Dunne is the President and Chairman of the Board of the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL), a charitable research organization established in the late 1990’s to build upon the foundation laid through the research carried out at the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) Laboratory. In addition to his role with ICRL, Jeff is a systems engineer and researcher in the fields of data science and artificial intelligence at the Johns Hopkins University, where he augments his focus on the nature of consciousness with skills in a wide range of technical disciplines, from signal processing and acoustics to data fusion and linguistics.
Jeff is also an award-winning author and playwright. With his 2023 novel, Nexus, he weaves together the scientific and the spiritual to introduce the principle of syntropy to readers of any age and background, showcasing the importance of finding balance at every scale—personal, societal, and global.
Dr. Dunne holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, as well as a M.S. and Ph.D. in Experimental Physics.
